Bioregion

The Bioregion grows through cooperation!

When something new is being developed, there are many unknowns. Here we've summarised the most common questions about the Bioregion we've heard so far. If you are also interested in the Bioregion concept and its implementation, feel free to ask your own question!

The definition of a bioregion is: “A bioregion is a geographical area where farmers, the public, tourism operators, associations and public authorities agree on the sustainable management of local resources based on organic principles and practices.” But an easier way to put it would be that the Bioregion is an area in which those involved - citizens, businesses, governments and non-government organisations - agree to manage resources in a nature-friendly way and to live sustainably, thus ensuring the conservation of the area's natural values, availability and fair distribution of resources and self-sufficiency!

No. The Bioregion does not aim to ban conventional farming. It aims to encourage different practices for maximum protection of the natural environment and wildlife, including organic farming. The Gauja National Park is characterized by a higher share of organic farms than the region's average. We hope that the Bioregion initiative will help growing this share even more!

Several municipalities in the Bioregion (e.g. Cēsis and Sigulda municipalities) grant property tax discounts to owners of organically certified land. One of the Bioregion's actions is to promote the consumption of organic food, including green procurements in schools, social care and other institutions in the Bioregion's municipalities. Where demand grows, supply follows!

Anyone can help developing the Bioregion – both natural and legal persons!

First step: read and sign the Bioregion's Memorandum on Good will! Follow the Bioregion newsletter and attend our events.

Once again, a great start is to sign the Bioregion Memorandum on Good Will, to follow and share Bioregion news to help Bioregion's work reach more people. But as the Bioregion is driven by the initiatives of our partners, you will soon be able to find important work that you can contribute to in the “Support the Bioregion” section of this page!
